Aaron Pratt
Aaron Pratt was a son of Phineas Pratt, one of the men of Thomas Weston's colony of 1622, and of Phineas's wife Mary Priest, a daughter of Degory Priest of the Mayflower. His birth is not recorded. Lincoln's History of Hingham gives his age at death as eighty seven, which puts his birth about 1649. A tablet set up by descendants says he died at eighty one.
He came to Hingham about 1683, when he bought a tract of land in the second precinct from Capt. Joshua Hobart. The second precinct was the southern parish of Hingham, the part that later became the town of Cohasset. He lived on what is now South Main Street, farmed, and was constable of the town in 1706.
He married twice. His first wife was Sarah Pratt, a daughter of Joseph Pratt of Weymouth. She bore him eleven children at Hingham: Henry 1685, Daniel 1687/8, Aaron 1690/1, Jonathan 1692, John 1693/4, Sarah 1695, Elizabeth 1697, Moses 1699, Mary 1701, Mercy 1703 and Hannah 1706. Sarah died on 22 July 1706, aged forty two, three months after Hannah was born.
On 9 August 1707 he was published to Mrs. Sarah (Wright) Cummings of Charlestown, a widow. She bore him four more: Abigail 1708, Phineas, born 31 December 1709, Benjamin 1710/11 and Nathaniel. Phineas, who spelled himself Phinehas, became a housewright and settled at Granville. Benjamin went to Harvard and became chief justice of the Colony of New York.
Aaron made his will on 1 June 1730. He died on 23 February 1735/6 and the will was proved on 9 March 1736. He is buried in what is now Cohasset Central Cemetery, under a slate stone carved with a winged face. It begins "Here lyes buried ye body of Mr Aaron Pratt who died February 23 1735/6". Lincoln wrote of him that "prob. all who have borne this surname by birth in Hing. and Coh. are his lineal descendants."
