Abigail Wells
Abigail was the wife of John Wells of Goshen, in Orange County, New York. Their children were Israel, Abigail, Joshua and Mary. Her husband died on 4 July 1776, and Charles Wells Hayes says his will named her.
On 9 March 1781, "being weak in body," she made her own will as "Abigal Wills, widow of the County of Orange." She gave most care to her granddaughter Abigal Swezy, probably her daughter Abigail's girl. She left her "one bed, three pair of sheets and other bed furniture; my best suit of cloths, my trunk, £26 in silver and gold, payable by my executors when she is eighteen." The younger granddaughters, Dorothy and July Sweezy, had twelve pounds each.
To "my daughter, Abigal Swezy" she left "two small silver table spoons, two tea spoons, and the equal one half of my furniture and wearing cloathes." To her daughter Mary Carpenter she left fifty pounds in specie, meaning coin. To her son Israel went "the small trunk his father used to keep his writings in." She made Israel Wills and "my friend, Henry Wisner, Junior, of Ulster County" her executors. The witnesses were Isaac Parish of the Precinct of Goshen, cooper, and James and Sarah Dunning.
The will was proved on 7 January 1783, so she died between March 1781 and the start of 1783. Her son Joshua is not named in it. Her maiden name is not known.
