Ada Terry

Ada Graves Terry was born at Wrightstown, a village on the Fox River in Brown County, Wisconsin, on 13 January 1879. She had at least one sister, who married Roy Cripps and was living at Flint, Michigan, in 1958.

She married Joseph F. Terry of Kaukauna, the eldest son of Walter J. Terry and Elizabeth Robinson. Joseph was about six years younger than she was. She moved to Kaukauna about 1908, and their son Steven Leo Terry was born there on 19 April 1909. Ada already had a daughter. In the census of 1910 the household in the town of Buchanan, just outside Kaukauna, held Joseph, Ada, written Ida and aged 30, the baby Stephen, and a ten-year-old girl written Viola Tuttle, entered as Joseph's stepdaughter. Steven's obituary in 1995 named his sister as Iola, wife of Archie Scott. The surname Tuttle points to an earlier marriage of Ada's.

A year after that census, in May 1911, the Kaukauna papers reported that her husband had gone missing, had nearly drowned, and then had shot himself three times through the neck. He survived and was taken to the Northern Hospital for the Insane near Oshkosh. By 1920 he was home with Ada and Stephen, and they stayed married until his death in 1956, more than 45 years later. The couple belonged to St. Mary's Catholic parish.

Joseph died in May 1956. Ada lived her last years at 709 West Seventh Street, Kaukauna. She died there about half past nine on the morning of Wednesday, 17 September 1958, after a long illness, aged 79. She had lived at Kaukauna for fifty years. Her funeral was at nine on the Saturday morning at St. Mary Catholic church, and she was buried with Joseph in Saint Marys Cemetery, under a stone carved with the Good Shepherd and the words "The Lord is my shepherd." She left her son, Steve, of Kaukauna, her sister, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
