Adelbert Quackenbush
Adelbert Quackenbush was born at Adams, Massachusetts, on 6 April 1860, the son of Thomas Quackenbush and Lucy Hughes. Adams is a mill town in the Berkshire hills, a short way south of the Vermont line. His memorial gives 1857, but his death certificate and his gravestone both say 1860.
He came north to Bennington, Vermont, and about 1876 married Nellie Knapp, a Bennington woman fourteen years older than he was. Her obituary says in 1928 that they had married "fifty-two years ago" and that most of their married life was spent on Branch Street.
Adelbert worked as a mason, and his son George was a stonemason by 1917. He and Nellie had four children: Albert Elmer, known as Robert, born in 1880; Frank Edwin in 1881; Susan in 1883; and George in 1886. All four were still living in Bennington when Nellie died at their Branch Street home on 26 September 1928.
Adelbert outlived her by nearly eighteen years, still on North Branch Street extension. In May 1946 he fell ill with acute bronchitis, which his death certificate says was due to inhaling smoke. He died three weeks later, on 28 May 1946, aged 86. His daughter, Mrs. Edward Martin, gave the details for the certificate. He had lived in Bennington fifty years and was buried beside Nellie in Park Lawn Cemetery. His stone reads "Adelbert Quackenbush, 1860, 1946."
