Adeline Amanda Leatherman
Adeline Amanda Leatherman was born in 1830 in Claiborne Parish, in the hill country of north Louisiana. Her memorial names her parents as Samuel Gibbs Leatherman and Hellen Lois Koonce. On 7 November 1848, at eighteen, she married William Jasper Johnson, a Georgian.
She bore fifteen children over twenty-two years, two pairs of twins among them. The third, Samantha Caldonia, called Donia, was born in Louisiana in February 1853, and about then the family moved to Texas. Her husband farmed and preached for the churches of Christ, and Donia married a preacher of the same church, Joseph Allen Reaves.
William died in Comanche County in 1902. Adeline was a widow for twenty-three years. She died at Rogers, in Bell County, on 22 October 1925, aged 95, and was taken back to Comanche County to be buried beside him in the Pendergrass Cemetery. Her marker reads "In loving memory, Adeline Amanda Johnson, July 11, 1830, Oct. 22, 1925."
A photograph of her in old age survives: a woman with her hair drawn back, in a dark dress.
