Agnes Adams
Agnes Adams was the wife of John Adams the elder, a husbandman of Barton St David in Somerset. In March 1603/4 he lay sick and made his will. He left the rest of his goods "joyntely unto my wife Agnes Adames and unto my sonn Henry Adames whom I doe make sole executors". He was buried on 22 March.
The will had never been signed or witnessed. On 7 August 1605 Agnes took administration of her husband's goods, which were valued at £62. Her bond to the bishop's court survives, torn and damaged. Administration gave her the court's authority to collect his goods, pay his debts and divide what was left.
In 1609 her eldest son John, of Compton Dundon, died. His will of 9 May 1609 named her and her son Henry as executors. Her husband's will was exhibited in court the next month.
She was buried at Barton St David on 15 January 1615/16. By then her son Henry had married Edith Squire and had children of his own.
In 1597 her husband had stood surety for another Agnes, the widow of John Stone of the same parish. J. Gardner Bartlett, who printed the family's records in 1927, guessed from that bond that she was born a Stone. No record gives her maiden name.
