Agnes Clarke
Agnes Clarke was baptized at Colyton, Devon, on 16 May 1548. The clerk wrote her as "Annes Clarke, dafter of John Clarke, of Coliton." Her father, John Clarke the elder, was the leading merchant of the town. When Henry VIII seized the manor of Colyton from the beheaded Marquis of Exeter, some of the townsmen bought part of it from the Crown. John Clarke's name stands first on the king's patent to them.
Her brothers were John, Francis, Roger and Edward, and her sister was Marrian. Her mother is not known for certain. The Conant genealogy of 1887 named Anne, daughter of William Macye of Colyton, from a marriage of 1544. That entry is for a John Clarke "of Colyforde," and there were several men of the name in the parish.
On 4 February 1578 she married Richard Conant of East Budleigh at Colyton. They had eight children. The youngest, Roger, born in 1592, went to New England in the 1620s and became the first settler of Salem.
Her father died on 6 April 1585. His will, proved in London on 1 May 1585, left a share to "Agnes Counnant" and to her three children, the eldest of the eight then living.
Agnes and Richard were buried at East Budleigh on the same day, 22 September 1631. The Conant genealogy printed the year as 1630, but Richard's goods were valued on 30 September 1631.
