Albert Schierenbeck died at Cincinnati on 28 October 1901 and was buried two days later at Vine Street Hill Cemetery. He was thirty six. He left a widow of thirty and three children, the youngest of them eight.

The records take his surname apart. He appears in the Cincinnati city directories every year from 1884 to 1893, and the compositor set his name differently almost every time: Scheirnbeck, Schreinbeck, Schermbeck, Schermbeek. His son's 1918 death certificate says Schernbeck. His granddaughter's 1935 marriage licence says Scheonbeck. The burial register of the cemetery that holds him uses the German original, Schierenbeck, and so does his gravestone.

The 1902 directory lists Mary Schierenbeck, widow of Albert, a year after he died, and joins the man in the Vine Street Hill register to the man on Harry's death certificate.

He was born in Indiana, not in Cincinnati. Three sources say so: the 1900 census, his gravestone and the 1910 census answer for his son. The 1918 certificate says Cincinnati, but that answer was given by somebody describing a father-in-law who had been dead seventeen years.

His own household is on the 1900 census of Cincinnati Ward 18, which carries him with no given name at all: the head of household 170 is entered simply as *Schierenback, husband, male, 35*. Mary is in the same return under her own age and birthplace.

It gives his birth as May 1865 in Indiana, and both of his parents as born in Germany, which no other record says.

The same page says he and Mary had been married twelve years, so from 1888, and that five children had been born to her and three were living. Two Schierenbeck children died before 1900 and the census does not name them.

The two children Mary buried are almost certainly Alfred and Clarence. Vine Street Hill took an Alfred Schierenbeck on 13 August 1896 and a Clarence Schierenbeck on 25 June 1898, and both went into single graves in Section 12, numbered 2251 and 2443. Cincinnati held two Schierenbeck households and the other one, out at Elmwood Place, owned a family lot in Section 16 with four of its people in it. These two are not in that lot. They were buried one at a time in ground bought by the grave, in the years between Harry's birth and the census that counted five children and three living.
