Born 1884, Contrada, Avellino, Italy
Died 1942
Father: Antonio Copertino
Mother: Filomena Marzolla

Alessandro Copertino was born at ten minutes past one in the morning on 1 November 1884 at Contrada, a farming town in the province of Avellino, east of Naples. His father, Antonio Copertino, was a contadino, a peasant farmer working the land, and was twenty-five. His mother was Filomena Marzolla, a contadina. The birth took place in the family's house at number 2 on the town's via Piazza. Antonio carried the news to the town hall at a quarter past eleven that same morning, and the registrar wrote the act. The boy was named Alessandro.

The family left for New York while he was young. He was naturalized at Brooklyn on 1 June 1906, when he was twenty-one, and in Brooklyn he went by Alexander or Alex. He married Rose Rocca, born the same year as he was at Sant'Angelo a Fasanella in the province of Salerno. Their son Anthony was born in 1905, George in 1907, Philomena about 1911 and Alfred about 1915. Two more children, Lucy and Alfonso, died as infants.

The family lived at 138 New Jersey Avenue in East New York, Brooklyn. Rose died there in the spring of 1929, aged forty-four. In April 1930 Alexander, 46 and widowed, was head of the house with Anthony, 25, George, 23, Philamina, 19, and Alfred, 14. On 4 October 1930 he married again, to Eva Kehlmeier, a German-born woman about two years younger than he was.

His daughter took out a marriage license in September 1936 with Walter Suchocki, a young man who lived across the street at 147 New Jersey Avenue. In April 1940 Alex, 56, was living in the twenty-second assembly district of Brooklyn with Eva, 54, and his son Alfred, 25, in the house they had held since at least 1935.

He died at Brooklyn on 13 April 1942, aged fifty-seven, and was buried on 16 April at St. John Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens. He lies in the grave of his mother, Filomena Copertino, under a gray stone cut in Italian: IN MEMORIA DI FILOMENA COPERTINO NATA IL 14 MARZO 1859 MORTA IL 1 APRILE 1924, then ALESSANDRO 1884 1942, then EVA 1886. Rose was buried in the same cemetery.
