Alexander Carpenter
He is known by his children. The five daughters every account of the family gives him are Alice, who married Edward Southworth and afterwards Governor Bradford; Agnes, who married Dr. Samuel Fuller of the Mayflower and died at Leiden; Juliana, who married George Morton and came over in 1628; Priscilla, who married William Wright and came in 1621; and Mary, who never married and came last, an old woman, on her brother in law's invitation. A William Carpenter who came in 1638 with a son William and settled at Weymouth is offered by a compiler as a possible son, and no record connects him.
The place is fixed by the address on a letter. Bradford wrote to the unmarried sister in the 1640s and directed it to Mary Carpenter at Wrington in Somersetshire, some eight miles from Bristol, to be left at the house of Joseph Leggat near the sign of the rose in Ratcliff Street in Bristol, to be conveyed as above said. He tells her the best and easiest way will be to come from Bristol, and that if she cannot pay for her passage she should agree with the master and he will pay it at this end.
Of the man himself there is no birth, no burial and no will. The registers hold his children: Nathaniel and Julian, who is Juliana, baptised at St James, Bath in 1582 and 1583/4, and Joan, Ann, Annes, Mary and Priscilla at All Saints, Wrington between 1590 and 1598. Annes is Agnes, and Joan and Ann are daughters no printed account of the family carries. Four of his daughters crossed the ocean and he did not.
