Alexander H. Foshee
Alexander H. Foshee was born on 10 August 1824 in Hall County, Georgia, by his memorial. He married Evalina M. Merrell, a North Carolina woman two years older, and the family marker gives the year as 1843.
The Foshees moved back and forth across the corner where Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee meet. Their eldest, Martha Ann, was born in Georgia in May 1844. The next three were born in Alabama, then Andrew in Georgia, Frank in Alabama and George in Georgia again.
On 22 July 1860 the census taker for the 1089th militia district of Dade County, Georgia, found the family. Dade is the far northwest county of Georgia, and its post office here was Running Water, Tennessee, just over the line. He wrote the name Fosha. Alex was 35, a farm laborer with $150 in personal property and no land, born in Georgia. Eveline was 40, born in North Carolina. Martha was 16, James 14, Elijah 12, Perry Lee 9, Andrew 7, Frank 4 and George 2.
The family later settled on a farm near Stevenson, in Jackson County, Alabama. Evalina died there on 23 October 1896 and Alexander on 5 January 1897. They were buried on the home site, in what is now called the Foshee Cemetery, with their son Franklin beside them.
Their great-great-grandchildren later set a granite marker there. It lists eight children: Martha Ann 1844, James Hardy 1846, Elijah F. 1848, Paralee 1850, Ransom E. 1851, Andrew W. 1853, Frank A. 1856 and George H. 1857, and it reads "Foshee of French ancestry". When their son Ranson died at Chattanooga in 1919, his death record named his parents as Alex Foshee and Evylyn Merriell.
