Alice was born at Cincinnati on 11 September 1912 and died in Hamilton County on 20 May 1997, aged eighty four, five months before her husband. The Ohio death index gives her occupation as housewife, her schooling as eight years, and her parents by surname only: a Nienaber father and a Henderson mother.

Nienaber is a Westphalian name, and Cincinnati took in Germans by the tens of thousands through the middle of the nineteenth century. The immigrant who brought the name to America is not known.

She named her second daughter Alice after herself. That daughter, Alice June Ellis, died in 2019, and her obituary names her parents as Joseph and Alice Heal.

She was born on 11 September 1912 to William Nienaber, a Cincinnati bartender of twenty nine. When he took out a marriage licence on 14 June 1913 the clerk entered him as WIDOWED. Her mother was dead before she was a year old.

The Ohio death index gives that mother's surname and nothing else: HENDERSON. The Anna Nienaber who appears beside her in the 1920 and 1930 censuses is Anna Heiob, whom William married in October 1916, four years after Alice was born.
