Allen Valentine was born on 27 May 1808 in South Carolina. His headstone gives the date and spells his name "Alen." The 1959 family genealogy says he was born in the Orangeburg District; a memorial says the Barnwell District, its neighbor. South Carolina called its counties districts at the time.

About 1832, in Mississippi, he married Cynthia Welch, a Georgian six years younger than he was. They farmed in Jones County for the rest of their lives. They had eleven children between 1833 and 1859. The 1850 census lists him as "Allen Volentine," born in South Carolina in 1808, with "Cintha," born in Georgia in 1814, and nine children.

About 1849 or 1850 he took in a young boarder, Warren Collins, a son of Stacy Collins of Jones County, so that the boy could attend a private school. Warren courted his daughter Tolitha Eboline. In 1854 Warren came back from Texas to marry her, and took her away by steamboat. She left with her clothes in her mother's meal sack. Eboline had driven the family's turkeys, a hundred at a time, to market at Mobile.

In the Civil War his son James Morgan Valentine joined the deserters of Jones County who fought the Confederacy under Newton Knight. James Morgan was Knight's first lieutenant. His son-in-law Warren had deserted in Texas and was hiding from the Confederate army in the Big Thicket.

He gave the land for the Union Line Church. The 1870 census found him in Jones County, and the 1880 census lists him as a farmer in Beat 2, the Laurel district. Cynthia died on 15 September 1887. He lived another fourteen years and died on 3 March 1901, aged 92. They were buried together in the Union Line Cemetery at Soso, in Jones County, under a white stone carved with a weeping willow. It reads "Alen Valentine / Born May 27, 1808 / Died Mar. 3, 1901" and "Cyntha Valentine / Born Dec. 20, 1814 / Died Sept. 15, 1887," and beneath both: "Safely anchored in the harbor of eternal rest."
