She is fifty seven in the 1910 census of the Union District, Cabell County, born in Ohio about 1853, the wife of Andrew J. Scarberry. Their granddaughter Myrtie, aged ten, is in the house with them.
Alley is a clerk's rendering. The 1920 census of Huntington writes her Allie J., and her death certificate Alay Jane.
Her children date the family's move. Her daughter Erna, called Earnie, was born in Ohio in 1893 or 1894, and Andrew was living in Ohio Township in Gallia County in 1870. So the Scarberrys did not cross into Cabell County until 1893 or later, and had been in West Virginia no more than about seventeen years by the 1910 census.
Her maiden name was Welch. Her own death certificate gives her birth as 1 April 1854 in Monroe County, Ohio, and her parents as David D. Welch and Rebecca Amos, both born in Pennsylvania. She died a widow on 3 March 1940 in Guyandotte District, Cabell County, of influenza with pleurisy, and was buried at Union Ridge Cemetery. The marriage itself is not in the indexes.
