Alonzo Robert Prentiss

He was born at Warrensville, east of Cleveland, in a settlement his grandfather had helped make. His father had come out of New Hampshire as a boy. At twenty-one he married Christina Margaret Ream in Van Buren County, on the Iowa side of the Mississippi, and their first daughter was born and died there the next autumn. Mary Louisa came in January 1848. Then gold was found in California and he went. The census taker of 1850 found him on the middle fork of the American River in El Dorado County and wrote his occupation as miner. He was still in California in 1852. In January 1854 he married a second time, in Jackson, Missouri, to a widow named Amildred Sarah French, and his son John William was born to Christina Margaret four months after that. She kept both children. He went on to Kansas Territory, took a land grant in Lykins County in October 1858, and was counted at Marysville Township there in 1860. He died in California, at Woodland in the Sacramento Valley, in January 1895, having crossed the continent twice and left his family on the Iowa side of it.
