Alvin Henry Ackermann

Alvin Henry Ackermann was born on 20 April 1916 in Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana. His parents were Adolph Frederick Ackermann and Anna Marie Baade. He graduated from Huntington High School in 1934. He then trained at the Winona Lake School of Professional Photography, a summer school for working photographers at Winona Lake, Indiana.

He married Helen J. McElhaney at Huntington on 5 October 1939. Their son Alan Richard Ackermann was born and died in 1943. Their daughter Joyce Ann was born at Huntington Hospital on 31 July 1944. Another daughter, Jerri Lynn, was born in 1961. His obituary names five daughters in all: Joyce, Karen, Jerri, Rita and Nancy.

Alvin was a photographer and a musician by trade. For 19 years he worked for E-Systems at its Memcor division in Huntington. He belonged to St. Peter Lutheran Church and its Sparks group. Earlier he had been a member of the Huntington Jaycees, the Huntington Lions Club and the Photo-Finishers of America, and he was a past president of the local chapter of the AARP, the association for retired people.

He died at his home, 716 Oak Street, at 9:22 in the morning on Tuesday, 4 January 2000, aged 83. His obituary counted 10 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. He is buried in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Huntington. The stone he shares with Helen carries a heart between their names: "Wed Oct. 5, 1939." His parents' stone stands directly behind it.
