Amanda M. Semlear
Amanda M. Semlear was born on 23 November 1842 at Williamsburg, which was then its own city on the East River, beside Brooklyn. Williamsburg became part of Brooklyn in 1855. She married Martin Himes of Philadelphia about 1865, and their first two sons, Casper and Robert, were born in Pennsylvania.
By 1870 they were back in Brooklyn, where the rest of the children were born: George, Carry, Martie and Ida. In June 1880 the census found Amanda, 38, keeping a household of nine in Brooklyn, with her husband, six children and a young Ida Himes from Pennsylvania. Her daughter Carrie died in 1888.
In 1900 Amanda and Martin were living at Folsom, in Ridley Township near Philadelphia, with their youngest daughter Ida. By 1905 they were in Brooklyn again. By 1910 she and Martin were living on South Park Avenue in Rockville Centre, on Long Island. She died there of pneumonia on Wednesday 15 June 1910, aged 67. The Rev. Edwin B. Richmond, pastor of the Baptist Church, held her funeral at the house on the Saturday night. She was buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery, in the lot where Martin and her son Casper were later laid beside her.
