Amos Merritt Blanchard
Amos Merritt Blanchard was born on 28 April 1818 at Jaffrey, in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, a town at the foot of Mount Monadnock. A memorial for him names his parents as Simeon Blanchard and Submit Winship, and lists six brothers and sisters, the eldest born in 1801.
He married Maria Thais Atwood, who had been born at Nelson, a few miles north of Jaffrey, on 9 August 1824. They had at least six children: Eunice Amanda in 1847, Milan Warren in 1849, Eliza Jane, called Lida, in 1854, William Edgar on 28 May 1857, Iola Frances in 1859 and Frank Phillip in 1867.
The family settled at Greenfield, Massachusetts. On 30 September 1885 their son William married Minnie Batchelder there, and the marriage register named his parents as Amos M. and Maria T. Blanchard. William named his own son Merritt, after his father's middle name.
Amos died at Greenfield on 20 July 1894, aged 76 years and 2 months. He is buried in Green River Cemetery, Section 20, Lot 603, under a stone headed FATHER. Maria lived until 31 March 1909, and her stone, headed MOTHER, stands beside his. William and Minnie are buried in the next lot.
