Ananias Allen was born in Orange County, North Carolina, in 1756. His family called him Nias. He volunteered in Wilkes County in 1781 and served as a private in Captain John Cleveland's company of Smith's North Carolina regiment.

After the war he moved west with the frontier: to Adair County, Kentucky, then Jackson County, Tennessee, and finally Jackson County, Alabama. He married a woman of the Laxton family, and their daughter Bettie married Samuel McCrary; Bettie named a son Joseph Laxton McCrary.

On 21 January 1835, at seventy eight, he swore a pension declaration in Jackson County, Alabama, telling the court where he was born, when he enlisted and under whom. The government rejected it because his service had been too short to qualify. He died in Jackson County in 1840, and a government stone now marks him: "ANANIAS ALLEN / PVT CLEVELAND'S CO / SMITH'S N C REGT / REV WAR / 1756-1840".
