Andreas Riethmüller
Andreas Riethmüller was born about 1793 at Hopfau, a small Lutheran village in the Black Forest uplands above the Neckar in the Duchy of Wurttemberg. His burial entry gives Hopfau as his birthplace. A family record kept among the Bessarabian German family papers puts his birth on 23 November 1793 and says the Hopfau family went first to Poland. In the years after 1800 many Wurttemberg families did the same: they settled in the Prussian part of Poland, and after 1814 moved on again to the new colonies on the Black Sea.
By 1818 Andreas was married to Margaretha Christmann and living at Alt Elft, a colony founded in 1816 on the steppe of southern Bessarabia, the province Russia had taken from the Ottoman Empire in 1812. The colonies there were numbered and named after Russian victories over Napoleon. Alt Elft, the eleventh, was Fère-Champenoise in Russian, and Neu Elft, its daughter colony close by, was Fère-Champenoise II. Their son Johann Friedrich was baptized at Alt Elft on 15 February 1818. Georg followed about 1821, Katharina on 18 February 1824 and Magdalena on 10 August 1826. By 1829 the family had moved to Neu Elft, where Anna Maria was born on 3 February 1829, Peter on 3 May 1831, Maria Elisabeth in July 1832 and Johann on 10 February 1838.
Margaretha died at Neu Elft on 14 July 1842, aged 43. That spring Katharina had married Johann Martin Irion, and that autumn Georg married Friederika Siewert. In 1854 a son Peter married Karolina Siewert, and on 23 November 1856 Johann, nineteen, married Rosina Hillius, the daughter of Friedrich Hillius. Johann was a widower by 1862.
Andreas Riethmüller lived on at Neu Elft into his eighties. He died there on 6 September 1876, two years before his granddaughter Katharina left the colony for Kansas with her husband Samuel Radke.
