Andrew Clarke
Andrew Clarke was a son of Thomas Clarke, who came to Plymouth on the Anne in 1623, and his first wife, Susan Ring. No record of his birth survives. The family historian placed it about 1635 and thought him the eldest son.
His father moved to Boston between 1655 and 1660, and Andrew went too. In 1671 he married Mehitable Scotto, daughter of Thomas Scotto of Boston. His father gave him a house in the neighborhood of Scottow's Lane, which ran from Ann Street to Creek Lane. Andrew is on the Boston tax list of 1674. He carried on the shoe business.
On 18 June 1673 his father made him a deed of gift of a house and ground in Boston, "in consideration of my parental love and affection unto my well beloved son Andrew Clarke, and also in consideration of his filial affection and dutiful carriage unto me." The ground fronted the street from the mill bridge to Charles River, twenty-two feet six inches wide. It lay beside the garden of Mr. John Clark.
Andrew served as an Assistant Counsellor and several times as Representative to the General Court. He and his father were among the original proprietors of Harwich, on Cape Cod. In his father's deed of gift of 6 June 1693 he received a larger share than his brothers, as an eldest son did. In 1694 he moved to Harwich. He died there in 1706.
His children were Thomas, born 10 July 1672, Susanna, born 12 March 1674, Andrew, born 1678, Scotto, born 1680, Nathaniel, born 1682, and Mehitable, born 8 December 1686.
