Andrew J. Scarberry was born in Gallia County, Ohio about 1848 and moved across the river into the Union District of Cabell County, West Virginia. He married Alley, and their son was Jack.
The 1870 census of Ohio Township, Gallia County holds three people and nothing else: SELA SCARBERRY, 42, born in Ohio; ANDREW J., 22; THOMAS J., 16. One surname, one adult, and no husband.
In the 1880 census Sela is at Guyan Township, fifty six, a farm labourer, living alone, both her own parents born in Virginia, and her condition is given as single. Not widowed. Single.
A woman of forty two keeping two boys of her own surname, twenty and twenty six years younger than her, with no other adult in the house, would be read as their mother, and a woman entered as single at fifty six would have had them outside a marriage. That would account for there being no known father, no marriage of Sela's on record, and no Scarberry household in Gallia County that Andrew fits into as a son.
It is not claimed. The 1870 census does not record relationships, and one word in a marital-condition column is thin ground for saying a man was born outside marriage.
