Ann Ellis

England
Children include John

Ann Ellis married Edward Culver at Dedham, Massachusetts, on 19 September 1638. Theirs was the second marriage entered in the records of the Dedham church, which had been gathered only that year. A genealogy of the family published in 1910 says she was a daughter of John Ellis, one of the signers of the Dedham covenant, but cites no record for it.

She was admitted to the Dedham church on 17 September 1641. Two days later her first son was baptized, entered as "John, ye sonne of our sister Culver." She bore four sons at Dedham: John in 1640, Joshua in 1643, Samuel in 1645 and Joseph in 1646. At Roxbury she had Gershom, baptized in 1648, a daughter who died as an infant in January 1651, and Hannah, baptized in April 1652. Edward and Ephraim were born after the family moved to New London, Connecticut, in 1653.

At New London her husband baked bread and brewed beer for the town and kept a licensed house with food and lodging. In 1664 the family moved to a farm near the head of the Mystic River. Ann signed her husband's deeds by mark, as he did: a sale of land in February 1662, the gift of land to "our eldest son John" in November 1667, and a sale to Robert Burros in 1665.

In July 1682 her husband, old and failing, gave land to her "in consideration of my own age and weakness of memory and understanding." She was alive then. Edward died in 1685, and her own death is not recorded. The 1910 genealogy says she lies beside him in the old burying ground at Groton.
