Anna Gabcan
Anna Gabcan was born in 1856 in the Kingdom of Hungary, in the part that is now Slovakia. Her parents are not known. In the Slovak church books her surname is written Gabčan, and in family letters Gapcanka, which is the feminine form of the same name.
She married Stephen Lepulica of Zariecie, in the Puchov district of Trencsen county. Their son Pavel was baptized at Zariecie on 8 November 1882, and their daughter Anna on 13 February 1886.
In 1887 she crossed to America with Stephen and the two children. They settled near Equinunk, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, on the Delaware River opposite Lordville, New York. Her third child, Kathryn, was born there on 14 February 1890. She and Stephen had been Lutherans. At Equinunk they were among the first members of the new Presbyterian church at Lordville.
She fell ill with consumption, the old name for tuberculosis. Her obituary speaks of "a slow and painfull decline". She died at home on 13 August 1898, aged 42, leaving children of about fifteen, twelve and eight. Her pastor, the Rev. F. Kirwan, conducted the funeral at the Equinunk Methodist Episcopal church and preached on the fourteenth chapter of John. She was buried in the Equinunk Cemetery on a Sunday. Her husband died three years later and was laid beside her. Their graves are marked only by plain head and foot stones.
