Anna Maria Braun
Anna Maria Braun was born in 1848 in Herzog on the Volga, the daughter of Andreas Braun and Anna Maria Windholz. The 1857 census of the colony lists her at nine in her father's house. Her family had been in Herzog from the founding: an Andreas Braun had come out from Blieskastel in the Saarland in 1767 to the neighboring colony of Rohleder, and her father was his grandson. Four of her brothers and sisters, Katherine Scheck, Johannes, Michael and Peter Andreas Braun, also came to America.
In 1867 she married Johannes Peter Riedel, and she bore ten children in Herzog between 1870 and 1889, two of whom died small. In 1887 she crossed on the Donau to Baltimore, 39 years old with nine children on the manifest, and lost the baby Alexander at the landing. The family farmed at St. Peter in Graham County. Her husband died in 1905. In 1910, a widow, she was living with her daughter Catherine Weigel in Glencoe Township, Trego County. She died in 1911, aged 64 by the arithmetic and 67 by the church register at Ellis, and was probably buried in St. Mary's Cemetery at Ellis, a mile or two from the Trego line, without a stone.
