Anna Russell

d. 1593
Died 1593
Children include William

Anna Russell was of Ratcliff, a hamlet of Stepney parish on the Thames, just east of the City of London. On 4 September 1580 she married John Vassall at St Dunstan's, the parish church of Stepney. He was a mariner and shipowner of Ratcliff. His first wife, Anne Hewes, whom he had married there in 1569, had left no surviving children. The Ratcliff estate came into the Vassall family through Anna.

Her first child, Judith, was baptized on 25 March 1582. A son John followed, baptized on 1 April 1584 and buried on 3 October 1585. Samuel was born on 5 June 1586.

In 1588, when Spain sent the Armada against England, her husband fitted out two ships at his own expense, the Samuel and the Little Toby. He commanded them himself and joined the Royal Navy against the Spanish fleet. Queen Elizabeth rewarded him with a grant of arms.

A second son named John was born on 24 March and died on 30 August 1591. William, her last child, was born and baptized at Stepney on 27 August 1592. Anna died on 5 May 1593, when William was eight months old, and was buried at Stepney. The next March her husband married again. His third wife was Judith, a widow, the daughter of Stephen Borough of Stepney and Chatham.

Her daughter Judith married John Freeborne, a yeoman of Prittlewell in Essex, and was a widow by 1618. Her son Samuel became a London merchant and Member of Parliament for London, and was one of the original patentees of the Massachusetts Bay Company. Her son William was named an Assistant of that company in its charter of 1629, and in 1635 he settled at Scituate in Plymouth Colony.
