Annie C. Halley
Annie C. Halley was born in New York on 25 May 1832. Her parents, Robert Halley and Annie Carstains, were both born in Scotland. On 15 April 1866, at Englewood, New Jersey, she married Charles Barlow, a partner in the credit-reporting agency Dun, Barlow & Co. She was his second wife. He had come from Dudley, England, at about twenty and had worked his way up from copying clerk to one of the four men who ran the agency. They lived in Brooklyn and had four children. Two outlived their father: E. Dudley Barlow and Elizabeth, called Lizzie, born in 1869.
In the summer of 1879 she and Charles took the children to the Hotel Brighton at Brighton Beach, with a Mrs. William Halley in the party. In April 1874 Charles had applied for a passport to travel abroad, "accompanied by his wife". He died suddenly at their summer cottage at Long Branch, New Jersey, on 25 July 1880, and was buried in the family lot at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
Annie lived on as his widow for thirty-four years. In April 1889 she and Lizzie were living at 110 West 64th Street in Manhattan. When Lizzie married the English-born chemist Arthur McGeorge that month, at twenty, the marriage certificate noted that the bride "has mother's consent". In 1910 the census found Annie in Manhattan with her son Dudley.
She died in her apartment on 94th Street in Manhattan on 10 July 1914, aged eighty-two, and was buried at Green-Wood on 13 July, under the Barlow obelisk, where her side of the stone reads "Annie Halley / Wife of Charles Barlow". Her daughter Elizabeth married George Hall Hoyt, named her son Reynold Barlow Hoyt, and was buried in the same lot in 1919.
