Annie E. Campbell was born in Philadelphia about 1862, the daughter of Edward P. Campbell and his wife Annie. Her father was born in New Jersey and her mother in England.
On 12 March 1882 she married Harry L. Evans, a Philadelphia mechanic and engraver. Their son Thomas Reynolds Evans was born on 7 October 1882. A second son, George Chapman Evans, was born and died in 1887.
Harry died suddenly on 14 December 1891, at thirty six. Annie was twenty nine, a widow with a nine year old son.
Twelve years later, in February 1904, her clothing caught fire from a stove. She was taken to Hahnemann Hospital, the homeopathic teaching hospital on North Broad Street, and died there of her burns on 24 February 1904. She was forty two. Because it was an accident, the coroner signed the return: "Burns occasioned by her clothing catching fire from stove."
She was buried from the house of her brother, George Campbell, at 546 North Fifth Street. The family's notice in the Philadelphia Inquirer of 26 February 1904 read:
"EVANS. On February 24, 1904, Annie E., widow of the late Harry L. Evans, daughter of the late Edward P. and Annie Campbell. The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, on Friday afternoon, at 1.30 o'clock, from the residence of her brother, Mr. George Campbell, 546 N. 5th st. Interment at Central Laurel Hill Cemetery."
She is buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Section Q, lot 176. Her son Thomas was twenty one. In 1910 he was still unmarried and living in the Fifteenth Ward with her brother, George W. Campbell, then fifty five and born in Maryland, and his family.
