Anton Pannkuk
Anton Pantekoek was born on 27 March 1830 at Loquard, a farming village in the Krummhörn, the flat marsh country of East Frisia on the North Sea coast of Germany. East Frisia was then part of the Kingdom of Hanover. His father was Boye Sybrands Pantekoek and his mother was Eilste Behrends. In America the family name became Pannkuk.
On 29 August 1857 Anton married Ockje Evers Meyer, the daughter of Evert Janssen Meyer and Taetje Thamsen. The marriage was entered in the church book at Campen, the village next to Loquard. Their first son was born two months later, on 26 October 1857, and christened Boye Siebrands Boyen on 15 November, after Anton's father. A second son, Berend Anton Boyen, was christened on 3 August 1860. A daughter, Ewerdina, was born in 1863 and died in 1865.
In 1864, while the Civil War was still being fought, Anton took his family to America. They settled first at Forreston, in Ogle County, Illinois,. Evert was born in 1866, Alice in 1867 and John in 1869. In 1871 the family moved west to Grundy County, Iowa, near Parkersburg. Siebrand, later called Seaver, was born in 1872, Fietje, later Ella, in 1873, and Effie in 1879.
In 1882 Anton and Ockje moved again, to Kossuth County in northern Iowa. They bought a tract of unimproved land in German Township. Their eldest son, Boyd, came to Kossuth the same year with his own young family and became one of the first settlers of the north of the county. Anton farmed until 1905, when he retired to the town of Titonka.
Anton died at Titonka on 1 April 1911, aged eighty-one. He is buried at the Ramsey Reformed Church Cemetery near Titonka. Ockje died three years later.
