Archibald Minshew
Archibald Minshew was born at Fort Gatlin, Florida. Fort Gatlin was an Army post of the Second Seminole War, built in 1838 near the site of what became Orlando. He married Martha Jane Hicks, born in Georgia in 1839. Their sons included Bryant Breckinridge Minshew, born in 1860, and Willoughby Minshew, born at Pierson on 13 October 1862. Martha Jane later married a Harper and had a second family. His son's death certificate of 1938 is the record that names him and gives his birthplace.
The census of 1860 gives his birth year as 1839. He married Martha Jane Hicks in Volusia County on 6 October 1859, and in 1860 the couple were living there. In 1857, at about eighteen, Archibald Minshew served as a volunteer soldier in Florida. Those were the last years of the Third Seminole War, when Florida volunteer companies hunted the last Seminole bands in the south of the state. A soldier written as Archibald Minshen served in a Florida Confederate unit from 1862, and he was probably the same man. His death is not recorded. By 1872 his widow had married a Harper.
