Arena K. Carr was born in 1815, by her memorial, and in Tennessee, by her son Samuel's death record. She married William Lovit Mansell, a Tennessean three years older, born in Jackson County. Three sons are given to her by the family's memorials: William Elmore, born in 1839, Samuel Mobley, born on 3 September 1841 in Tennessee, and Richard Elvis.

By 1850 the family had come north to Franklin County, Illinois. She died there that year, aged about thirty-five, and was buried at the Liberty-Ridlin Cemetery at Macedonia. No stone marks her grave. Samuel was eight. Her husband married twice more and outlived her by twenty-six years.

When Samuel died in Franklin County in 1916, his death record gave his mother as "CAR", born in Tennessee. Read as a surname, that is Carr, and it matches the memorial. It is the only record that names her at all. Samuel is buried in the same cemetery she is, under an obelisk.
