Arnt Pedersen
Arnt Pedersen farmed Vikan, a farm in Stjørdal parish in Nord-Trøndelag, at the end of the eighteenth century. The clerks wrote the farm Vichan, Wichan and Vigen, and wrote him Arnt or Arent.
He was at Vikan by 1790. That year and the next, Arent of Wichan stood sponsor at baptisms in the Stjørdal church, and on 14 June 1795 he brought a child of his own to the font.
The census of 1 February 1801 found him at Vikan as Arent Pedersen, 49, bonde og gaardbeboer: a farmer living on and working his own farm, rather than a cottar on someone else's. He was in his first marriage. His wife was Solloug Hansdatter, 45. Seven children were at home. Peder, 17, was already a reserve dragoon, a reservist of the mounted regiment that drew its men from the Trøndelag farms. Then came Gunild, 14; Hans, 13; Mali, 10; a second Hans, 9; Mallena, 5; and Johanna, 3. Two hired servants lived in the house, Ole Ellevsen and Lisbeth Braadsdatter, both 26. A Beret Arentsdatter, 21, was counted among the servants; her patronymic fits an elder daughter working on her father's farm, though the census does not say so.
Vikan was a cluster of households in 1801. Sivert Arentsen farmed the first holding with his wife Sara Olsdatter and eight children, and cottars and a soldier's family lived on the farm's land around them.
Arnt Pedersen was buried at Værnes church on 12 February 1807. The register calls him Gaardmand of Wichan, aged 52, which puts his birth about 1755; the census age points to about 1752. His daughter Gunnild was then nineteen.
Twenty eight years later, when Gunnild married for the second time in 1835, the clerk asked for the names of both fathers. Hers was entered as Arnt Pedersen, and she was written as born at Vigen.
