Audrey Mae Swindle
Audrey Mae Swindle was born on 15 December 1920 in Itawamba County, Mississippi. On 12 March 1939, at 18, she married Idus G. Vinson, a farmer born in Alabama. Their children came over the next decade and more: Charles about 1940, Maggie Pearl in 1941, Jimmie about 1944, Neal about 1947, Harold in 1950, and later Gary and Larry.
On 15 May 1950 the census taker wrote her name as Audra M. Vinson, 29, born in Mississippi, keeping house on the family farm in Itawamba County. Five children lived with her, the youngest a new baby, along with her husband's widowed aunt Myrtle C. Rogers. Her younger brother Elzie Lee Swindle lived a few houses down the same road that year.
The family moved on to Golden, in Tishomingo County, near the Alabama line. Idus died at home there in April 1994 after fifty years of farming. Audrey was a widow for nearly sixteen years. She died at Golden on 9 January 2010, aged 89, and was buried beside Idus at Mt. Zion Cemetery near Tremont. Their double stone gives her name as Audrey Swindle and records the day they married.
Her daughter, Maggie Pearl Elrod, worked as a seamstress for Blue Bell and Golden Manufacturing and was married to Bobby Elrod for sixty-four years. Her eldest son, Charles, drove a truck for many years. Both their obituaries name their mother as Audrey Mae Swindle Vinson.
