August Radke
August Radke was born on 29 April 1825 in the German colonies of Bessarabia, a son of Daniel Radke, a colonist born in Poland about 1801. In 1827 and 1828 his father was living at Alt Elft, where August's brothers Johann and Christoph were baptized, and from 1831 at the daughter colony of Neu Elft in the Akkerman district. On 9 November 1844, at nineteen, August married Christina Zaiser of Neu Elft, a Wurttemberg settler's daughter of seventeen. The parish entry of the marriage gives the groom's father as Daniel and the bride's as Michael. They made their home at Neu Elft, and his father lived there until his death in 1860. Fifteen children were born to them and ten died young: Katharina in 1845, Rosina and Caroline who died as infants, Johann in 1852, two Daniels named for their grandfather who did not live, a pair of stillborn twins, Samuel on 21 December 1858, Maria, Friedrich in 1862, August in 1864, and Louisa.
His son Samuel went to Kansas in 1878. The next year August followed with Christina and five of the children, landing at New York on the General Werder on 7 July 1879 and going on to the Milberger settlement south of Russell, where his son had taken land among other Bessarabian and Volga German Lutherans. That same year he buried two sons there, Fred at seventeen and August at fifteen. He farmed at Milberger for fifteen years and died on 12 August 1894, aged 69. His stone in Milberger Cemetery is cut in German: here rests in God August Radke, born 29 April 1825, died 12 August 1894, and below it the name of his wife Christina. She lived on in Samuel's house.
