August Roeber
August Roeber was the father of Emelia Dassler, born Amalie Röber in New York City on 17 November 1859. The family name is written Röber in her marriage record. He was very probably the August Roeber, grocer, whom the census of June 1880 found at Newark, New Jersey. That man was forty-four and born in Germany, so born about 1836. His wife, Dora, was fifty and also German-born. Three daughters were at home, all born in New York: Ammelia, twenty-two, single and working as a servant, Hulda, thirteen, and Lydia, ten. Ammelia's age, birthplace and town all fit Emelia, who married Henry W. Dassler, a carpenter of New Rochelle, at Newark a year later, on 9 August 1881.
His wife's name is a puzzle. The 1880 census calls her Dora, while his daughter's obituary in 1935 calls her "a daughter of the late August and Emelia" Roeber. Dora may have been a second wife, or one woman may have gone by both names, as a German Dorothea Emilie could.
In his last years he lived in New Rochelle, in Westchester County, where his married daughter was raising eleven children. He left no will that named an executor. On 26 October 1907 the Westchester County surrogate's court at White Plains granted letters of administration, the court's authority to settle the property of a person who dies without an executor, on "the estate of August Roeber, of New Rochelle" to Amelia W. Dassler. She was very probably his daughter. He had died by then, most probably not long before. Where he is buried is not known.
