Austin Bearse
Austin Bearse, also written Augustine, sailed from Southampton in the Confidence, listed on 24 April 1638 as aged twenty. In 1639 he went to Barnstable on Cape Cod with the first company of settlers.
He joined the church of the Rev. Mr. Lothrop at Barnstable on 29 April 1643. He was made a freeman of Plymouth Colony in 1653, served as a grand juror in 1653 and 1662, and was town surveyor in 1674. His wife's name is not known.
They had eleven children, all born at Barnstable: Mary in 1640, Martha in 1642, Priscilla in 1643/4, Sarah in 1646, Abigail in 1647, Hannah in 1649, Joseph in 1651/2, Hester in 1653, Lydia in 1655, Rebecca in 1657, and James in 1660. Priscilla married John Hall, Sarah married John Hamlin, and Abigail married Allen Nichols. He had each child baptized on the day it was born.
Amos Otis, the Barnstable historian, wrote of him: "He was one of the very few against whom no complaint was ever made." A road from his house to Hyannis was called Bearse's Way, and the Bearse's Islands kept his name too.
He was living in 1686 and was dead before 1697.
