Bedford Pierce was born on 1 September 1841 in Washington Parish, Louisiana, on the Mississippi line north of Lake Pontchartrain, according to his grave memorial. A family tree on that memorial gives his parents as Humphrey Asa Peirce and America Permelia Blackwell.

His wife was Mary Ellen Booty, eight years younger, born on 22 February 1849. They raised their family near Kentwood, in what became Tangipahoa Parish, and their children were born over more than twenty years: Walter H. in 1869, Otis on 2 September 1889, and Luther in 1891. When Otis applied for a Social Security number he named his parents as Bedford Pierce and Mary E. Booty, and his death certificate in 1959 names them again, as Bedford Pierce and Mary Booty.

Bedford Pierce died at Bolivar, Tangipahoa Parish, on 28 August 1922, aged eighty, and was buried in the Pierce Cemetery near Kentwood. Mary Ellen outlived him by twenty-three years.
