Benjamin Congdon
The first Congdon of this family in the Rhode Island records, born about 1650 and living at Portsmouth as a young man. On 20 September 1671 he bought 230 acres in Narragansett near Pettaquamscutt from William Brenton and Benedict Arnold, but he stayed on the island for another decade before he moved onto it. He was made a freeman in 1677 and witnessed a deed from George Bisson of Portsmouth in April of that year. In 1679 the town ordered him to move his shop at Newport to another lot, and said that if he disobeyed it was to be pulled down. In December of the same year he had a deed of 200 acres in Narragansett, part of a tract of 7,620 acres laid out by Samuel Wilbur to Jireh Bull and twenty four other men.
By October 1683 he had crossed for good. Calling himself in the deed "late of Portsmouth, planter," he sold John Sheldon the Narragansett land Brenton and Arnold had granted him, and from then on he is a Kings Town man. He was taxed 3s. 6d. in 1687. In May 1710 he and seventeen others bought 7,000 acres of the vacant lands in Narragansett that the Assembly had ordered sold. He made his will on 2 July 1715 and it was proved on 10 December 1718, some months after his death in June. He and his wife were buried in the Congdon burial ground at Congdon Hill, near Wickford.
