Benjamin Coogle was born in Maryland about 1769 and was living in Marion County, Virginia, in 1850.

He left a will, and a codicil to it.

*23rd September 1851. I do make this my codicil to the foregoing will. My grand daughter Dorothy R. Coogle, daughter of Jonathan Coogle, has been living with and working for me nearly all her life and has been a dutiful child. Therefore I bequeath to her at my decease out of my personal property the following articles, to wit, the bed, bedstead and bedding now usually known as the bed of said Dorothy R. Coogle, said bedding consisting of two double coverlids, several calico quilts, sheets and all the other items belonging to said bed. Also the bureau which is now in my house, being the only one now there. Also one milk cow of her own choosing.*

He signed it with a mark, so he could not write his name. It was proved at the November term of the Marion County Court in 1861, so he was alive in September 1851 and dead by the autumn of 1861.

In it he calls Dorothy the daughter of Jonathan and his own granddaughter, which makes Jonathan his son.

Benjamin's wife was Dorcas, and Dorcas and Dorothy are the same name in that country. Jonathan named a daughter for his mother and she grew up in her grandparents' house.

One of the witnesses was W. T. Willey, which in Marion County in 1851 is almost certainly Waitman T. Willey, the lawyer who went on to be one of West Virginia's first United States senators and a principal author of the state's creation. He was in that courthouse constantly and his name is across those books. The other was G. R. C. Allen.
