Bertha Kate Clarkson
Bertha Kate Clarkson was born in Rooks County, Kansas, on 20 March 1886. Her father, Mathew Flint Clarkson, had come to Kansas from New York as a young man and hunted buffalo on the plains with his brothers until 1876. Her mother was Palmyra Davis of the Paradise neighborhood. Her brother Reuben was born in 1882.
Bertha married Phil Thurston, a farmer of Saline Township in northern Ellis County. She had ten children in sixteen years: Alice in 1907, Martha in 1908, Eunice in 1910, Blanche in 1914, Howard in 1915, Beulah in 1917, Harley in 1918, Louella in 1919, Charles Elmer in 1922, and a last baby in 1923 who did not live.
Bertha died on 1 February 1923, aged 36. She was buried at Fairport, in Russell County, beside the infant, and near her own parents. Her small red stone reads "Mother, Bertha K. Thurston, 1886 - 1923". Forty-four years later, Phil's death notice still named her as his first wife, Bertha Clarkson.
