Bethiah Fobes
Bethiah Fobes was born at Bridgewater on 11 October 1683. The town clerk entered her as "Bethiah, d. Eward, Oct. 11, 1683." She was the fourth of the nine children of Deacon Edward Fobes and Elizabeth Howard. Her brothers and sisters were Elizabeth, John, Mary, Hannah, Ephraim, Joshua, Benjamin and William. Her grandfather John Fobes had been one of the first proprietors of Bridgewater. Her mother's father, John Howard, kept the town's licensed tavern.
On 20 January 1702/3 she married Samuel Keith, a son of the Rev. James Keith, the town's first minister. Her sisters followed her into the same family. Elizabeth married Samuel's brother Joseph, and Hannah married his brother Timothy in 1710.
She bore nine children over twenty years: Constant in 1703, Amos in 1705, Samuel in 1707, Bithia in 1710, Susanna in 1714, Ebenezer on 25 October 1716, Robert in 1718, Jane in 1720 and Benjamin in 1723. The clerk entered them as children of "Samuel and Bithia".
Samuel died in February 1759. She lived on for eleven years and died on 8 January 1770. Her stone in the Scotland Cemetery at Bridgewater reads: "In memory of Mrs. Bethiah, wife of Mr. Samuel Keith, who died January the 8th, A.D. 1770, in the 87th year of her age."
