Bridget Davis
Bridget Davis was baptized in the Catholic parish of Kells, County Meath, on 18 January 1823. She was the daughter of Thomas Davis and Mary Halpin. The priest wrote the mother's surname as Halpin, Halpeny and Halfpeny over the years, all forms of one Meath name. Her sponsors were Hugh McLoughlan and Mary Swift. The same parish baptized more children of Thomas Davis and Mary Halpin: Alice in 1821, a second Alice in 1825, Ann in 1837 and Thomas in 1839.
On 22 February 1846 she married Pat Farrelly at Kells. The priest wrote her as Bridy Daves, and the witnesses were Js Farrelly and a Mary Douty. Three children were baptized there: James in December 1846, with a Frances Davis as one of his sponsors, Nicholas in April 1848 and Judith in October 1850. Those were the years of the Great Famine in Ireland. About 1851 or 1852 the Farrellys emigrated to Troy, New York, where the name became Farley. The family remembered that they left James behind with grandparents and brought Nicholas with them.
In the state census of 1855 she was in the Sixth Ward of Troy with her husband, a newborn daughter Mariah, and two lodgers named Smith. In Troy Bridget had more children: Maria, Thomas, Julia, Patrick and Francis. When St. Joseph's Church baptized Francis in 1862 the register named his mother as Bridget Davis. In 1865 the family lived in the Sixth Ward of Troy, and her husband worked in the iron trade. Censuses gave her birth year as 1823, 1824, 1825 or 1827.
Patrick Farley died in May 1892. The 1893 Troy directory lists Bridget as his widow, and she stays in the directory until the 1899 edition. Bridget Farley died on 1 July 1899 at North Greenbush, the town at the south edge of Troy where the family had lived since at least 1880. She was buried that month in St. Joseph's Cemetery, in the Farley lot where her husband lay, Row 85, Lot 13. She was about 76.
