Cassander Johnson
Cassander Johnson, called Cas and sometimes Cash, was born on 27 November 1868, in Buchanan County, Virginia, by the date on his stone. Family accounts name his parents as John Jackson Vance and Sarah "Sallie" Johnson, who later married a Blair, which would explain why he carried his mother's surname.
About 1888 he married Causby Jane Kelley, a daughter of Harvey Kelley and Sallie Mullins. They settled in the Clintwood country of Dickenson County, a county formed only in 1880 out of the mountain edges of Wise, Russell and Buchanan. Their eldest son George was born on 27 November 1889, on Cas's own twenty-first birthday.
In 1910 the census taker found the family near Clintwood. Cash Johnson was 43 and had been married twenty-two years. His wife was 38 and had borne ten children, all ten living. George, the eldest, was married and gone by then. At home were Harrison, 18, Brownlow, 16, Benjamin, 14, Lillie, 11, Hobert, 10, Cash, 7, Lula, 5, Gilbert, 3, and Ada, 1. A last daughter, Alpha Louise, came later.
The family followed the coal work over the line into Kentucky, and by the early 1930s Cas and Causby were living at Jenkins, in Letcher County. His son Cass, the namesake, had gone north to the town of Russell on the Ohio River, where he was a night patrolman. In January 1933 the old man's hat blew off while he was riding a truck. He jumped from the moving truck to get it back, fell and fractured his skull. He died on Thursday 26 January 1933, aged sixty-four. Six days earlier his wife's father, Harvey Kelley, had died at eighty-seven, so Causby buried her father and her husband in the same week.
Cas Johnson was buried in the Vanover Cemetery at Burdine, near Jenkins. His stone reads "Cas Johnson, Nov. 27, 1868, Jan. 26, 1933." Causby was buried beside him in 1945.
