Catharine Maguire was born in Canada in September 1830, the daughter of Irish-born parents whose names are not known. The census of 1860 gives her birthplace as Canada East, which was Quebec, and that of 1900 as English Canada. She was of Oswego, New York, when she married Luke Ratigan in 1853, at about twenty-three. Her husband was an Irish-born ship carpenter who became a meat dealer, alderman and assistant chief of the city's volunteer fire department. They lived in the First Ward and belonged to St. Mary's Church.

They had at least five sons. Willie was born in 1856 and died in 1862, at about six. Frederick was born about 1857, and Edward, William and Luke followed; Luke was born in 1861. In March 1859 the floor of St. Mary's Church gave way during an evening mission, and Lawrence Murray, a brother-in-law of her husband, was among the four who died.

Her husband died at their home on West Eighth Street on the night of 8 April 1892, after six months of gangrene in his foot. She outlived him by twenty-three years. In 1900 she was the head of her own household in the First Ward, a widow married forty-seven years, and the mother of five children, four of them living. Her son Frederick, then forty-two, lived with her. In 1905 he was still there, and in 1910 her son Luke was. By 1911 she was an invalid at 52 West Eighth Street, and her son Frederick, who had been in poor health, was staying with her. On the morning of Saturday 8 April 1911 he did not come down. Near noon she sent her son Luke to his room, and Luke found him unconscious on the bathroom floor. Frederick died that evening, on the nineteenth anniversary of his father's death.

Catharine died in 1915. Her name was cut beneath her husband's on the family monument in Saint Paul's Cemetery, "Catherine Ratigan, 1830-1915," above the name of their son Willie. Two years later her son Luke offered the furniture of the house on West Eighth Street for sale.
