Catharine Roberts
Catharine, wife of Samuel Roberts of Providence Township and mother of Edward Roberts. She is named with her husband in the conveyance of 17 May 1771 by which "Samuel Roberts and Catharine" granted a hundred and thirty acres and fifty three perches to their son Edward. She was dead or at least unprovided for by 1793, when Samuel's will makes no mention of a wife.
Her maiden name may have been Francis. On 1 March 1740 a Samuel Roberts married a "Kath. Francis" at the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. The dates fit. Her eldest son Edward witnessed a will in July 1763 and married in 1768, so he was probably born about 1741, a year after that wedding. She had a daughter named Catharine. A Francis family was also in New Providence. Thomas Francis bought 117 acres there on 2 April 1761, when the Pennsylvania Land Company sold off its land at a vendue, or public auction.
Against the match, Samuel Roberts was a common name, the Providence Robertses were Baptists, and nothing ties the Philadelphia entry to Providence. It is a possibility, not an identification.
