Catherine Gross
Catherine Gross was born at Gundolsheim, in the Haut-Rhin, in March 1819. On 20 March her father, Romain Gross, a forty-eight-year-old vine grower, presented her to the mayor, François Xavier Gross, and named her Catherine. The record names her mother as Catherine Zusatz, his wife. The family plaque at Castroville gives her birth as 20 March 1819.
On 23 July 1845 she married Henri Vonflie, a Gundolsheim man three years older. Their daughter Marie Barbe was born on 2 April 1846, when Catherine was twenty-seven, and a second daughter, Catherine, was born in September 1847 and died in April 1848.
In the winter of 1848 she sailed from Le Havre with her husband, her daughter and her husband's parents, and landed at New Orleans on 7 February 1849. The family settled at Castroville, the Alsatian colony on the Medina River. There she bore three more daughters. Maria Catherina, born on 9 February 1851, died on 17 November 1852. Marianna was born in March 1852. Anna Maria Catherina was born on 6 November 1853 and died within the month.
Catherine died after the birth on 30 December 1853, at thirty-four, and was buried in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery at Castroville. Her husband was killed by Indians less than two years later, and her three living children were raised by their grandparents' generation.
