Celia Mills
Celia Mills was born in Kentucky about 1814. Her father was James Mills of the Concordia country in Meade County, and the marriage bond her husband gave on 1 April 1834 says so outright: the license was for "Miss Celia Mills Daughter of Jas Mills." She married Richard Brown, a farmer of the same neighborhood, and bore him ten children between 1835 and about 1856.
Her father died before December 1838, leaving no will, and his land in Rawleigh Colston's old survey stayed undivided for eighteen years. When the Meade Circuit Court finally ordered it sold, the commissioner's deeds of 1857 and 1859 listed every heir with a spouse beside them, and Celia is there in the middle of the roll: "Richard Brown and Celia Brown his wife." Her sister Eleanor had married Richard's brother Joshua, her sister Martha Jane had married Andrew J. Greenwell, and her sisters Mary Ann, Letitia, Harriet, Martina and Julia Ann appear beside their husbands in the same list.
The 1850 census gives her age as 38 and the 1860 census as 44, and the two cannot both be right. She was still alive in June 1860 with eight children in the house. By the 1870 census she was gone: her husband is a widower in dwelling 11 of Concordia with four of the children. Her death, her burial and the year of either are not known. A granddaughter born about 1870, a daughter of her son John, was named Cecelia.
