Charles Gillett brought the name into the Neversink valley, and what is known of his family rests on his brother's will.

On 26 June 1775 he signed the Association at what is now Deerpark, the pledge that put the signer's name against the Crown, and he is the only Gillett on a list of about two hundred men otherwise made up of Cuddebacks, Gumaers, Swartouts, Van Inwegens and Depues. In 1799, when the new town laid out its road districts, Charles Gillet was road-master of district eleven, from the county line near John King's to Elijah Reeve's; the list does not say whether this was he or his son of the same name. The district above his begins at William Gillet's.

That William made his will three weeks after the road districts were drawn, on 5 April 1799, and left his moveable estate to "my Brother John Gillet Charles Gillet Senior and Anne Ross", his two brothers and one sister, and his land to "my Nefew Charles Gillet". So the two Gillett households on that mountain road were brothers, and the nephew who took the farm was this man's son.

His origin may lie at Suffield in Connecticut, where Samuel and Anna Gillet had a William born in March 1729/30, a John in August 1732, and a Charles baptised on 30 May 1736: the three names in the will, in the same order. The connection was put forward as a theory in 1945, and no record joins the Deerpark brothers to Suffield.
