Charles Nelson Bryant
Born at Homer, Cortland County, New York on 21 May 1820, the sixth of Zenas and Deborah Bryant's nine children. On 10 April 1848 he married Louisa M. Chase at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. They lived in Jefferson County, Wisconsin until 1859, and there, by the county album that later printed his life, he was elected deputy sheriff, then sheriff for three years, and assessor for three more. He moved the family to Minnesota, where Henry was born in Martin County in 1865, and in 1869 to Plattsmouth, Nebraska, where he kept a hotel for three years.
He took up government land in Gage County and was farming at Blue Springs by 1880 and in Island Grove Township in 1900, next door to his son Henry. He and Louisa raised six children of their own, a young man named Henry Doty who died at Vicksburg, and an adopted daughter, Winnie. The whole clan converged on the Smith and Phillips County corner of northwest Kansas about 1901. He died on 25 February 1903, in his eighty fourth year, and is buried at Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center, where Louisa was laid beside him twelve years later.
