Christiana Addison was born at Dunfermline, in Fife, on 9 September 1799. She married John Phillips, also of Dunfermline, and they lived at Paisley in Renfrewshire. Their children were born between 1822 and 1843: John, William Addison, Margaret, Christina Addison, David Lawrie, Maxwell and James Addison. William was born at Paisley in 1824 and Margaret in 1826.

Her brothers William and David Addison had gone to Randolph County, Illinois. In 1839 Christiana, John and the children followed and settled near them. A museum panel at Salina gives the year as 1839; other accounts say 1838. John died in Randolph County in February 1842. The panel says he left "Christina to rear their five children."

Her son William became a journalist and went to Kansas in the 1850s. In 1858 he founded the town of Salina. In the words of the panel: "As a 63-year-old widow, she came to Salina in 1860 with her son Maxwell. She was the community's midwife for many years."

She held one share of the Salina Town Company, the body that owned the townsite and sold its lots. A share was worth six lots. Her certificate, No. 11, is made out to "Mrs. Christiana Phillips." It is signed by A. C. Spilman as secretary and by her son Wm. A. Phillips as president. It is dated "Jan 15th 18_1," and the third digit is unclear, so it was issued in either 1861 or 1871.

During the Civil War her daughter Margaret Hanna came to Salina with her children while her husband served in the army, and she lived with "her mother, Christina Phillips, and brothers." Margaret and her sister Christina Campbell sewed the town's Union flag on Margaret's sewing machine.

She died at Salina on 15 January 1893, in her ninety-fourth year, fifty-one years a widow. She was buried at Gypsum Hill Cemetery. Her headstone reads: "CHRISTIANA, Wife Of JOHN PHILLIPS, Born At DUNFERMLINE, SCOTLAND Sept. 9, 1799, Died Jan. 15, 1893, In Her 94th Year." Her son William died later the same year.
